Inquiry Topic for Term 1.

Our school inquiry this term is ALL CULTURES SHINE.

In Room 1 we have looked at the map of the world and we have seen there are lots and lots of countries in the world.

We know where New Zealand is on the map.
We are in the South Island.
              Our city is Christchurch.
              Our school is in Waltham.

Every morning we say hello in different languages and some words are hard to say properly.

We are learning this song from YouTube
Hello to All The Children of The World - YouTube

Click on the link to hear and practice singing at home. We will be singing the song when it is our turn to organise the school assembly.

Wednesday at 9.30 am in Room 1.

Glitter Text Generator

Wow, this morning our chrysalis started to crack open and we could see the wings inside.  We had just started our phonics when Mrs Tarawhiti noticed something was happening.

We all sneaked over and were very quiet as we watched the butterfly wriggle out of the chrysalis.

Watch this short video of the later stages of the butterfly coming out.

Now we can answer our big question.

Our Discovery Table

We have lots of very hungry monarch caterpillars in Room 1. They are fussy eaters and only like swan plants or milkwood. They will eat pumpkin if nothing else is available.

PLEASE, if anyone has some swan plants to donate for our hungry caterpillars to munch through that would be fantastic.

Hanging ready to change into a chrysalis

We have been asking questions to find out more about the caterpillars.

Our big question is:

How does the butterfly come out of the chrysalis?

February 2014

It is great to be back and seeing all the five year old children starting school for the first time and it is a privilege to be their first teacher.   They are so enthusiastic to learn and play.
The class newsletter will go home on Friday with a copy of                                                       "Being a Room 1 STAR!"
Four photos later and still haven't managed to get everyone looking at the camera.  Lucky we will have professional class photos later this term!

A class walk around the school grounds had us hugging and feeling the tree trunk of the Bell Tree in the senior playground.

Look out for regular updates of what we are doing in Room 1 this year.

T Shirts Week 3 Shared Reading

LISTEN TO OUR T SHIRTS VIDEO!

Our practice video.

After reading our shared book we decided to make our own T Shirts with the capital letter of our name.  We wanted to share the T Shirts and the poem to match at assembly.

To be successful:
  • I will speak with a clear voice.
  • I will speak loud enough for everyone to hear.
  • I will stand still and look at the audience.

21 OCTOBER 2013

Welcome back to this last term of the school year especially to the new children and their families.

Please look out for the newsletter for Room 1 with the Reach for the STARS in Room 1 sheet.

We have been busy learning about ways to make work easier by using simple machines.

Our definition is:

A simple machine is a device that helps make work easier.

On Friday, our caretaker Mr Deadmarsh worked with small groups to let the children experience using tools from the garage. Here are a sample of the photos. Come into Room 1 to see your child's photo.
